Project Story

The Bikupan (Beehive) was one of those projects that stood out from the start. A round building with a green roof is already unusual, and adding a solar system on top made it even more interesting, so much it even became a finalist for the Urban Environment Award.

I was leading the project from the planning stage, creating the system layout and making sure the material was delivered and installation followed our instructions.
Together with colleagues form HQ Germany we supported the installation on site, focusing on both the technical details and the appearance of the system.

Challenges & Solutions

Starting point
The choice of system was given since it had to work for green roof.
This was our first green roof system in Scandinavia, which made the project more exciting. Because the system is built as part of the roof, our work had to be done right at the beginning, before the substrate and vegetation were put in place.

Precision
The system had to be centred and secured with accuracy to prevent movement regardless of the weather conditions. That meant a lot of ballast was needed, and just as important it had to be placed in the exact right spots.
At the same time the placement had to allow the water retention layer and sedum to be seated correctly so the roof could function as intended.

Support
I worked hand in hand with green roof specialists and installers to secure the process followed the correct order.

The communication made sure the system was integrated properly into the roof build and the quality was not declining during the project.

Looking back

The installation of 72 kWp on Bikupan was made possible thanks to strong teamwork and determination from everyone involved. Each step had to be done in layers: roof protection, mounting system, substrate, sedum and finally the modules on top.
Careful planning, timing and steady pace to get it right.

As this was our first green roof system in Scandinavia a lot of pressure was put on the project. Not only from the end customer but also because this will serve as a benchmark and reference for our future customers and sales.

Out of all the projects I’ve worked on, this one is easily in my “super duper unique” list. Never has a roof been this green, this alive, and still looked aesthetically pleasing.
