Project Story

Two projects in central Stockholm came with unusual logistical demands.
In total there were 20 different roof areas, which meant every detail of material handling, planning and coordination had to be carefully managed.

The main challenge was how to reach all of the roofs. With busy city streets and active bus lines, closing roads for a crane wasn’t possible.
Even if that would had been the case, a crane couldn’t lift all parts far enough into the building footprint.
The solution was helicopter lifts, which gave us the reach we needed.

Challenges & Solutions

Choice of logistics
After considering options, the helicopter proved to be the most efficient choice.
A crane wasn’t realistic with active bus lines and long reaches into the building, the cost and time would have been far higher. With the helicopter, all pallets could be lifted quickly and precisely, saving both hours and remaining within project budget.

Accuracy under pressure
With a helicopter you do not get second chances. Every lift had to be right the first time. Some of the loads were heavy and needed to land in exactly the right spot, deep into the roof structure. To make it possible we prepared everything in advance, marked drop zones and had spotters with radio contact guiding the pilot.
It was a high-pressure moment, but with planning and coordination for each placement the outcome was successful.

Team effort
Project like this is never about one person.
We had many roof areas to manage and a strict schedule.
To make it work, everyone was briefed beforehand and given clear roles, from people on the roof to those on the ground monitoring keeping the sidewalks safe.
During the lifts, we stayed connected over walkie-talkies and coordination made the whole process safe and efficient.
In the end, it was clear what good preparation and great teamwork can lead to.

Looking back

This project showed me just how much a large operation depends on every single person involved. The actual helicopter lifts were only a part of the picture.
From the crew on the roof to those guiding the helicopter on the ground and the sidewalks, everyone had a part to play and made it all come together.

For me, this project was a real lesson in how teamwork and coordination can turn a complex job into something that feels almost like an effortless and smooth job.
